29 lessons · about 4 hours · certificate on completion

What you will be able to do

  • Explain why Black real estate professionals founded NAREB in Tampa in 1947
  • Describe how exclusion, redlining and racial covenants shaped American housing
  • Trace NAREB's role in the fight for fair housing from 1948 to 1977
  • Tell Tampa's own story: The Scrub, Central Avenue and the 1936 redlining map
  • Explain what it means to be a Realtist and what NAREB works for today

On July 29, 1947, twelve Black real estate professionals from seven states met in Tampa, Florida and founded the National Association of Real Estate Brokers. They were shut out of the industry's mainstream boards, so they built their own, and they called themselves Realtists.

This free, self-paced course tells that story from the beginning: the exclusion that made NAREB necessary, the night it was founded, the fight for fair housing, Tampa's own Central Avenue and redlining history, the affiliates and leaders who built the movement, and NAREB's work today. Every lesson has photos, video and short quizzes, and a final test earns you a certificate.
